It's more that you just can't write fanfic. You can't. It's this horrendously depressing story that ends on the closest thing to a high note possible. Anything before can only show the same endless misery, and anything afterwards would only slip back into that endless misery. The world is dying, and the human evil the wikipedia page focuses on is ultimately inconsequential.
That they're inevitably missing important points (such as it is not fucking another world you little twits! IT WAS NOT SUBTLE IT'S FUCKING EARTH HATE YOU ALL) and butchering the themes (rapist apologist powers go!) is minor in comparison to the fact you cannot write fanfic about it, period. It just doesn't work.
