AO3 comparison

Dave: 4045 1,203
John: 3241 1,064
Rose: 2367 204
Jade: 1804 243

The ordering shift I think reflects the Archive's greater proportions of femslash. You'll notice a more striking change with Kanaya's numbers.

The numbers are generally closer, but that's expected because this measurement is getting all tags, rather than a measure of the primary characters, so there's much more overlap.

Davesprite: 223 54
Jadesprite: 19 4

Dirk: 1181 458
Jake: 852 183
Roxy: 733 113
Jane: 514 56

Karkat: 2992 1,273
Sollux: 1592 522
Terezi: 1513 299
Gamzee: 1481 721
Kanaya: 1433 134
Eridan: 1357 429
Vriska: 1295 211
Tavros: 974 383
Aradia: 929 130
Equius: 876 120
Feferi: 861 104
Nepeta: 800 225

As I mentioned above, Kanaya does much, much better here. There's now a female character who's third, and two female characters outdoing Eridan. He's still outperforming Vriska, though, even with her being a popular designated villain.

(The factor of introduction time is also involved here. FFN adds characters slowly, so there's a lot of completely unlabeled fics in the beginning of the category. This doesn't alter general trends, but it does change comparisons. Terezi was introduced a lot earlier than most of them, so she had time to build up fic.)

Tavros' numbers plummeted. So did Nepeta's - probably because on FFN she's useful for het pairings but the Archive has less of a focus on that.

Kankri: 113 27
Meenah: 102 2
Kurloz: 95 23
Mituna: 94 13
Aranea: 93 3
Cronus: 87 23
Latula: 67 10
Porrim: 59 5
Meulin: 54 17 (42 contain both Meulin and Kurloz)
Damara: 29 3
Rufioh: 25
Horuss: 15

This is much improved although still pretty dismal. Meenah and Aranea finally are doing well, as you'd expect characters introduced well in advance of everyone else...and it's still Kankri topping the list and they're still doing about as well as characters just introduced.

Damara is doing better than I'd expect. Rufioh and Horuss continue to be unpopular.

Spades Slick: 346 46 and Jack Noir: 197 46 (these two tags aren't linked)
DD: 317 20
Snowman: 134 15 and BQ: 50 (ditto)
HB: 142 3
CD: 133 5
PM: 79
WV: 73 6
AR: 44
WQ: 29
WK: 17

So basically the carapace fandom is somewhat more balanced over on FFN despite the two character thing generally increasing the disparity you'd observe.

For comparison:
PS: 176
PI: 154
AD: 46
HD: 29
NB: 11

Signless: 248 68
Condesce: 228 18
Psiioniic: 174 24
Doloresa: 156 12
Dualscar: 146 9
Mindfang: 144 11
Highblood: 128 41
Disciple: 105 18
Handmaid: 88 5
Redglare: 88 5
Summoner: 56 32
Darkleer: 52 4

Condesce rockets upward, probably because she's got a lot of minor appearances across a variety of fic. Signless continues to dominate, though. And Summoner plummets down to nearly the bottom.

Bro: 817 12
Dad: 427 13
Mom: 234
Grandpa: 57 8

Doc Scratch: 144 7
Lord English: 76 4
Caliborn: 101 16
Calliope: 75 16
Lil Cal: 47 10
Casey: 31 1
Squarewave: 23 5
Sawtooth: 22 4

Like the Condesce, Scratch and English are putting in minor villain appearances in a lot of fic, which probably explains those numbers. And Caliborn overtakes Calliope. Dirk's robots continue to have only a single fic's worth of difference.

I had no idea Sollux was so popular. I find him pretty forgettable and I have rarely had reason to be reminded of him. I guess it's only the particular corner of fandom I'm in where no one cares much about him, except for a stray Karkat/Sollux, Feferi/Sollux, or Eridan/Sollux fic I see once in a while. I guess because they want a woobie to be fussed over by someone? ...Man, I can't even think of any "Sollux is an awesome l33t hacker" fics, which at least I theoretically might like.

I'm pretty sure it's the combined weight of Karkat/Sollux, Feferi/Sollux, Eridan/Sollux, Aradia/Sollux, and Miscellaneous/Sollux, coupled with him being one of the trolls that popped up early in Hivebent and isn't particularly objectionable, making him a good filler character in other stories. He isn't competing with any big ship - the only one there that conflicts with majority shipping is Karkat/Sollux, and that relationship's entirely invented so there's no problem sticking him in a fic that has Karkat/Someone Else the way, say, adding Equius to an Aradia/Someone Else fic would.

Sollux is sometimes an awesome hacker, but only so someone else can coo over him for not eating properly or so it proves his love of Eridan when he stops spending all his time on the computer to hang out.
