One of the new stories in Pokemon involves a mew girl. You know, the standard ‘created by rockets, trying to live a normal life, super unbelievable powers’…and, just as always, that’s the summary and the story itself, The Mew Girl, doesn’t actually have a plot I can decipher as such. (It’s more incoherent rambling. First chapter has someone yelling about some mew who they won’t let the rockets take and equally loud and over the top fighting. Second chapter is some girl who can randomly make more of herself. I won’t go further).

Anyway, in the Pokemon section, half-mew characters are more common than magikarp. So it would seem like one should avoid creating them because they’re overdone.

But I notice that all mew-hybrids, like pretty much all hybrids, tend to suck. They’re basically just standard mary sues who have rockets after them because they’re so special. Okay, they’ve got some very minor extra trait that was chosen because it was cool, like ears, but that’s all.

So…
Since it hasn’t been done well often, writing a good mew character is still something I’d like to see. Which of course means I immediately start getting ideas on how to do it differently.

So here’s one I made up, just because.

Mellina, the anthro mew girl. And yes, she has pink ears and a tail. She’s also got pink hair. She wears used, slightly battered clothing.

Mellina is a playful and harmless girl. She has the attention span of a catnip-high kitten. She’s not exactly a deep thinker, although she’s more childish than stupid. She wanders around without real purpose, showing up in a small town and then leaving again. She'll happily do what anyone asks her…but she’ll forget about it ten seconds later and start chasing falling leaves. She’s sweet and most people tend to deal with her much as a wandering kitten: you feed it, laugh at its antics, and avoid kicking it.

Mellina was probably created by rockets, but her concept of time is infantile and so she’d probably answer most questions about where she’s from with ‘Mellina was always here’. She has powerful psychic abilities, but getting her to actually use them is nearly impossible, so how strong they are is unknown and also unimportant. They’re mainly defensive, activating when she’s frightened.

Most importantly, Mellina does not worry incessantly about being captured by rockets, because she does not know who they are. Nor does she angst, because she doesn’t know what the word means. Is it something you can play with? If not, she’s going to go back to trying to catch the twitchy pink thing that’s hiding behind her.

Anthro Fics

Flashfire and Dawn Allies have a few good Anthro fics. I think they're a bit less sucky because the fic doesn't center around the main character with "uber cool super magic powers!" A couple of Flashfires older fics are T3h 5u(k, I guess he didn't have the cojones to take them down, or the scary notion, he never realized that he be writin' Sues in the beginning.

Ah, I remember reading those. You've right, they are different than the standard. Maybe it's because the authors are writing about an anthro as a character, rather than a character as an anthro, if that makes sense. Hm, I'll ponder this.
