If any more get stripped, I'm not sure what to do

So I'm checking my options as I redo PR's coding. There were four symbols left to denote different sorts of speech:

\ or \\
/ (// doesn't work)
( ) or (( ))
: (:: doesn't work)
#

I know [] was working last time I checked, but it's gone the way of its fancier cousin, {}. Halfway through writing this post, \ and \\ stopped working and, upon checking, has been stripped from Inheritors and, presumably, any other story that's used it.

EDIT 9:11 - FFN is not loading HTML asterisk scene breaks when formated to the right, but does show them if centered. I'm certain they were loading fine a few minutes ago, and they can currently be added in with either centering.

I think I speak for us all when I ask, WTF?

Actually, I was able to generate {} without any problem by going into HTML mode and using the codes { and }, respectively. At least, I could export a chapter of a story, insert those codes, save it, and then replace the chapter with a version including them and have them show up when I went in and looked at the story from my profile.

Perhaps you can get the other characters to work, too, by doing something similar?

That'd be { and }. There's a table of ASCII HTML codes here if you're not familiar with the ones for the symbols you're testing.

Giving up now. The codes I used are in the link I gave you, anyway.

OMFG that works!

Last time I tried using the HTML mode everything would get stripped. Maybe it was just because I was trying to generate < marks. Yes!

Now to see if I can get my \\ back.

I managed to make <> appear; they got stripped when I tried saving them, but that might have been because I put them right next to each other like that. *shrug*

[identity profile] farla.livejournal.com 2008-10-26 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure that's been changed because they've disappeared out of the chapters they used to be, leaving some really fucked sections of PR.

But all of a sudden \\ is working again when I type it in normally, and it's come back in Inheritors. Something weird is going on.

Something really, really screwy is going on. It just let me save a document that had * and ~ in it without stripping either.

...dare we hope the long nightmare is ending?

...dare we hope the long nightmare is ending?

If so, we can hope only for a short time in the sun before the n00bs figure it out and we get a bunch of titles/stories replete with ..+˟*Ȼreǡtivǝ*˟+.. word art and formatting.

But if it would mean that I could finally start using something than the preprogrammed hr for line breaks, I would be pleased.

The weirdest thing was, when I was uploading the last Unoriginality chapter, even the line breaks weren't working (I had to jump to HTML, add another copy of the code, save the formatting, get two lines, then save the entire document and get one.) and I thought they were in the process of removing even those.

And now I can write *********** if I want.

Hmm, look at what I saw on the front page:

Private Messaging (PM) page/feature improvements: a) can now embed links to fanfiction.net or fictionpress.com addresses, b) preview feature has been added, c) previously banned characters are now valid, d) PM message is now limited to 6000 characters.

Maybe the PM updates managed to cross wires with the actual story-publishing system, which would explain the apparently inconsistent implementation. Or perhaps this just foreshadows their allowing banned characters in actual stories, and what we're seeing now is a kind of "work in progress thing" as the coding is still getting worked out.

I checked and missing characters have come back in places they were long gone.

I thought the ~ were gone from PR and they were showing up, but I thought that might have just been that they were HTML in the first place. I checked an old story that I know got them stripped months ago (it was one of the ones I uploaded to Fanlib and I had to re-add the characters when I copied it, so at least eight months back), and now it has ~ again.

And their current update does seem to indicate they've been messing with their document manager...
