I don't much care about the sex of a fridging victim, honestly. I find it annoying when ANY character is killed purely to advance the motives of a central protagonist.
I don't mean to say that if only Rue was a boy, it would be fine to treat him as a disposable nonperson who exists only to validate the main character. The fact fridging mostly happens to female characters in media/the way those characters are treated overall in this book overall is just indicative of a second problem.
