So I have kittens. They're very cute, very friendly, they're the perfect age for kittens...they're lovely, really.

Kas-cat met them, was disturbed but after she met them again outside seemed a lot more friendly. The black one ran up to her on the porch and she made an attempt at licking him. It was cute.

But she's gone again. If you keep her inside the house her pupils dilate, her fur starts twitching, her tail lashes and she jumps up against the door. She hisses, she grows, she whines, anything to get the door open.

And it's sad, because she's sweet, the kittens are lonely, and you can see in those rare moments that she'd like to be with them. Then it's gone again and she's staring at things that aren't there and trying to get out.

The kittens themselves are the same. We were warned the black one is a bit skittish, but he's actually fine. He was from a litter of ferals, but he got over his shyness fast. No, it's the other one. The sweet, people-oriented one we were given because it was hoped he'd encourage the black one.

See, he's just adorable. And when he starts looking at you with big, imploring eyes and meowing adorably for treats when he sees you eating, you think he's so cute. And you feed him. And you think it's somewhat odd that a cat is eating pasta, but he's cute. We figured he was an alley cat or something.

But it isn't that happy.

He's a druggie cat. His mom belonged to a group of people who decided that it would be funny to paint their cat, and really, there aren't many reasons people do that. They were lucky and got taken away, but...

He's used to starving. It's gotten pretty clear in the last few days. He doesn't come when you open a can of catfood, he comes when he hears refrigerator open or silverware jostle. He comes when he sees anyone else eating. He skids on the floor because he ran over so fast. He pushes the other kitten out of the way to eat no matter how much is there. If there are two dishes, he goes for the other kitten's dish. He starts mewing plaintively when you eat something and don't give anything to him. We thought it was because he could smell it at first but he does it for anything. Gum, even. He wails if he sees one of us chewing gum. He begs for food every time he sees it, wailing and climbing at your legs, and he is very good at seeing it. During the afternoon his stomach becomes too bloated and he throws up. Minutes later he's begging by your feet for more food. He doesn't believe you'll feed him. He doesn't believe that there's food beyond what you have right at that moment, and that if he doesn't beg you'll still feed him.

Like I said, it's cute. It's just also, it's horrible when you think about it.
