^^ Well, technically I did join the site before they had those rules. And equally technically, the 'if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all' is only supposed to apply to things where you're talking about something that can't be changed, as in, wow, you're ugly. It really can't be applied on a site that tells you to give criticism at the bottom of the review box. If they don't want to hear what people say, they don't have to post it on a public site set up for that purpose.
But personally, I feel it's disrespectful to the readers to post a story simply to glorify yourself and your friends. If you're posting, you should be writing something you think people actually would want to read, not something that just tries to make you or your avatar look good. It's the internet equivalent of barging into a conversation and starting to talk about how great you are and how you did something mundane no one cares about. And isn't that a bit rude?
