Betty - Elizabeth, consecrated to God. Fundamentalist tradition holds women as of little importance, so she's given a short, simple name.
The general vibe I'm going for is "hey look! liberals! educating children!" I'm not far enough down the rabbit hole to know for certain which things are the triggerwords, but I know the general ballpark.
It must be really confusing to be a teacher in the Left Behind world. I pretty much just channeled my own flailing o.0 at what was happening for the biology teacher's commentary. The bit about Israel is kind of thrown together - it's hard to say what would happen if production shot up like that, especially since I'm going with the idea they can pretty much feed the world several times over. Since I'm trying to be realistic about everything else, Israel needs to be ungodly productive for their farms to make them a powerhouse. As to what that does to the world, I just kind of threw together all the stuff I want on the assumption it'll read as something horrifying to conservatives.
It's interesting metatextually, since Adalia's IC and OOC sins are basically exact opposites. The bit about GM plants is a good way of encapsulating it - my stance on them is STFU and eat your apples, while the Left Behind view is more "how can you be okay with scientists tampering with god's creation?!"
Next chapter: the rapture! Finally.
