I'm not certain, but probably, letting the argument "be over" with neither side admitting they're wrong is kind of like having both sides admit they were partly at fault. You didn't actually back away, just didn't hound them when they did it, but a lot of the people involved were already displaying nonexistent reading comprehension skills, so it wouldn't be a stretch for them to have misinterpreted it as "Well, you were wrong to call me names, but I was wrong to do those things that made you call me names too, let's be friends!"
