Pokemon Mary Sue Litmus Test:

There's no actual point system yet. However, answering yes to subquestions is generally much worse than answering yes to a main question.

General:

1)Is your character connected to canon characters (Say, being Ash's daughter)?
•Is it mentioned once and then forgotten?
•Would the story be the same without the canon characters?
•Do the canon characters act differently than normal when in the story?
a.Do they act differently when demonstrating the connection?
•Is your character the child of your favorite 'ship?
a.Is said 'ship significantly against canon yet unexplained storywise?
b.Are the two characters significantly out of character when interacting?
2)Do the legendary pokemon care about your character?
•Even though they don't do anything to deserve that attention?
•Because they're part of some prophesy?
•Because they're going to save the world?
•Because they're going to do something through their friendship with pokemon?
3)Do all characters either like or dislike your character?
•Do most characters like your character?
•Are the characters who dislike the character ones you don't like?
•Are the characters who dislike your character written as being unfairly mean?
a.Do you use this as a chance to bash that character?
b.Do other characters comfort your character afterward?
•Do characters act romantically interested in your character?
a.Despite one or both characters being too young?
b.Despite that character canonically not being interested in characters like them?
4)Is your character always the center of attention and never a bystander?
5)Does your character have or gain super powers?
•Are they vital to the story or could your character achieve the same things without them?
•Was your motivation for giving these powers that you thought it was cool?
6)Does your character hold the same basic beliefs as you?
•Even when someone in their position should not have these beliefs?
7)Does your character act bitchy or mouth off to other characters for no reason?
•Do the other characters tolerate this?
a.Even those who canonically won't stand any of it?
b.Do the characters think she's nice despite her behavior?
8)Is the narration generally biased (Her gorgeous green eyes...showing off his incredible skill...) toward your character?
•Even when the actual events or descriptions aren't that impressive?
9)Does your character possess random items that are significantly more powerful than their canon forms (a potion that heals pokemon completely, raises them five levels, and whitens their teeth)?
•Do these items pop up whenever they're needed and are they never mentioned otherwise?
10)Have you made up special titles for your character?
•Do you make up titles for trivial accomplishments or differences?
11)Do you point out that the character is immaculate in situations where it is humanly impossible (three weeks in the wilderness)?
12)Is your character the same age or around the same age as you?
13)Does your character possess the same physical features you have?
14)Does your character possess physical features you'd like to have?
15)Is your character named after you in some way (name, penname, middle name, etc)?
16)Do you base your character's life off yours?
17)Are all supporting characters present only in relation to your character?
18)Did anything happen to the character's parents?

Trainer:

1)Does your trainer start at over the standard age?
•Two years over?
•Three or more years over?
•Because you just wanted them to be?
•And they still intend to be a pokemon master?
•And they manage to beat people their age and over?
•Did you claim they were studying despite the fact they don't know anything significant about pokemon?
•Did your trainer fail to get and raise a pokemon during this time?
2)Does your trainer know nothing about traveling?
•Despite the fact you claimed they studied for one+ years?
•Do you gloss over this fact and have it never affect the story?
•Do you act as if they do know about traveling despite all evidence?
3)Is your trainer's knowledge purely technical and an excuse to show off the fact you know ghosts are resistant to bug moves?
•Do they routinely learn/forget this information when it's convenient for the plot?
4)Does the trainer always win battles?
•Does the trainer win in vastly unequal situations (such as say, beating a gym leader with one pokemon against six)?
a.On occasions when a pokemon does faint, has it already beaten four+ pokemon or otherwise shown its superiority?
b.Do you try to 'fix' this by having them lose on occasion but never having it really effect him?
5)Does your trainer start with an unusual starter?
•Because that's your favorite pokemon?
•Is it substantially stronger than usual?
a.Is it a legendary pokemon?
•Is it an insanely rare pokemon?
a.Again, is it a legendary pokemon?
•Is it a made up one?
a.One that could be substituted for an ordinary pokemon (Foxus, the fire type) without affecting the story?
•Can the starter talk?
a.Even though this is unusual and no other starter does in the story?
b.And it's never explained?
c.Despite this, does the starter always act as a plot device or object rather than another character?
•Are all of these things mentioned once and never again?
6)Will your trainer be a pokemon master?
•Despite starting late?
•Despite having the same basic skills (water is strong against rock, we know already) as every other trainer?
•Is the point of the story mainly your trainer becoming a pokemon master?
•Is becoming a pokemon master just a sidegoal BUT they'll accomplish it anyway?
7)Does your trainer find rare pokemon?
•Injured?
•Within the first two or three chapters?
•Will they use this as an excuse to rant self-importantly about pokemon abuse?
8)Does your trainer talk to their pokemon about how they want to be friends?
•Is this taken seriously in the narration and used as proof of how nice they are?
•Will it never affect the story?
•Will they still battle?
•Will no mention ever be made of it again?
9)Does your trainer have one of their pokemon attack them in some inane bonding thing?
•Does the scene happen once and is no mention made of it ever again?
10)Does your trainer say they don't want their pokemon to get hurt, but send it out in the next battle?
11)Does your trainer claim to hold views on pokemon that are at odds with what could be expected, or even contradicted by their actions?
•Are these views mentioned once and then never again?
•Do these views make them look good to you/your reader?
12)Does your trainer have an inexplicable rapport with pokemon?
•Will this be part of their special revealed destiny later?
13)Is your trainer really a pokemon?
•A legendary pokemon?
