The setting is quite vague, so there may be enough upheaval for some of it. Massive death toll, long time period, deliberate removal of history, keeping people isolated...That could change a lot. But even still, the odd names don't follow any discernible pattern and there should be more than two normal names.
Yeah...not really a fan of the best friend thing either. It generally comes off as both too convenient and forced.
