Okay, so from that I can conclude that "peeling turtles" is not some horrifying dissection thing. I would still like to know what it is.

They were shedding old layers of their shell. I think they haven't been spending enough time out of water, because the longer they spent running around in the air today, the more of it loosened.

I didn't until they started to. Looking it up apparently all sorts of weirdness goes on with their shells. I'm going to have to make sure the basking lamps are of proper blasting heat.
