You do have a point about self insertions. Often the writer knows hows the character would react about something but won't bother to write it down as they don't think that the person reading will not know the same information that they do.
Another fault with self-insertions is that they oten make the character too wonderful and perfect and loved by all. Human's do not like to see perfection in others- it annoys them. Every character should have a mjor flaw or two. If they don't the reader's cannot develop empathy with them and they are often really uninteresting characters.
