Hmm... 'handedness' seems to be most obvious in animals that use one side of the body to perform some task, as far as I can gather. Whales prefer one side of the jaw to catch prey over the other, seals and walruses favor one flipper to disturb the sea bed over the other... and on closer inspection, it looks like some animals do also have skewed demographics as far as right and left-handedness go.
So... hmm. I think I prefer your reasoning, since it does make her more distinct from humans, like you said.
