Mary sue's are bad but they don't neccesarily mean that the story will be bad I keep hearing that occasionally, and it seems people are missing the point. Having a mary sue means your character is bad. If your character is the main part of the story, and your character is bad, then the story is bad. If there's a plot that takes the main focus and the plot is good, then attention is off the characters and, provided the plot is good, the story is good, although not as good as it would have been with a better character.
Yeah, Livejournal doesn't like the fancy formatting I had when I did this in a word document. I'm going to fix it once I figure out how to move the subquestions properly.
