One World Religion
Apr. 1st, 2008 04:39 pmHave been reading the Left Behind books and running headlong into problems. Basically, the UN says, "Hey, you know what would be cool? A global religion." And everyone else says, "Cool!" Then the UN says, "Even better, let's ban all other religions!" and everyone goes "OMG that's even better!!!" Obviously I can just say that's how it goes, but I'm trying to limit the crazy to clearly defined plot devices (miracle miracle-gro).
I asked my parents. They were not helpful.
First I asked Mom.
Mom: The what what?
Me: One world religion.
Mom: The what?
Me: Where there's some global religion. How do Catholics think that happens?
Mom: We are a global religion.
Me: I mean like an oppressive one.
Mom: You can't out-oppress Catholicism.
Me: But how do they think it might happen?
Mom: We really don't care.
Me: But if there was one, what would it take for Catholics to get worried about it?
Mom: Maybe if they started shooting people? Or banning Virgin Mary statues.
Then I asked Dad.
Dad: Well, as we all know the UN has always wanted to remove religious differences to stop all the strife associated with various religions and so once they get power their first move...

Date: 2008-04-03 04:09 am (UTC)I'm trying to make a story where the basic plotline remains intact but people react realistically. So miracle grow - it's impossible, and everyone reacts to it with confusion, but it's also somehow real despite all reason and people have to deal with it. Easy. But doing so when it's a human decision rather than a matter of God screwing with the natural order of things doesn't work, and the one-world-religion is supposed to be a human decision. So I either need a reason people would do that, or a way of putting the deus ex machina reason in a neat little ball for people to react to.
...stupid atheists not secretly wanting to impose a one world religion on everybody, makes it so hard...
