The books are not as obviously hypocritical, but every character:
1) Donates their life savings to the cause. 2) Loses their job helping out one of the members, ending up fleeing for their life to hide in the safehouse. 3) Proceeds to angst about how they're being a freeloader.
A commune would be a massive step up from what's just a cult. Oh, and did I mention that the guy everyone decides is in charge for no reason ends up using the group's funds to buy a gun that's tens of thousands of dollars?
The only book that I know of that's really given a good, well thought out version of the horsemen is Good Omens.
Oh, not those horsemen. Or those ones. Or those. The other other other other other horsemen. These ones ride around killing people with smoke, fire and sulfur. Also, they're invisible except to believers.
