I agree re: head of the household. In terms of Gale's own objections, though, I could see how working in the mines is less problematic to him than accepting money earned by winning a childmurderdeath game. The former is more indirectly connected to the capital's evul than the latter. It's a fucked up form of logic, but not entirely unusual, especially in situations where employment is hard to come by.
But considering that there appear to be ample opportunities for getting by otherwise, yeeeeeah, he really should've had another job altogether. What's wrong with continuing to hunt and selling/trading what you've killed? It clearly wasn't a problem before, despite the fact that it's supposedly ~risky~. Or raising goats, like Goat Man? Or apprenticing somewhere? There's no clearly established reason why he has to work in the mines.
