For a while now I've been idly wondering if these anon reviews are from GhetsisFan or a group of his friends. The question was resolved this morning, when he sandwiched a review update on my hate forum between this review and the AOOO version of Fox Games.

The rambling had a sort of charm when I figured it was the result of extended riffing between dim children where they tried to top each other in thinking of reasons to hate me. The idea he's working himself into an insane froth alone is more off-putting.

lulz, i agree with Sonichog, the dialogue is really cheesy and crappy and the
story idea just SUCKS! I can already predict whats going to happen, OC gets
with canon character, seriously...this story is EXACTLY what the Homestuck
fandom doesn't need.

This is the only one to actually confuse me. My recent spat of flames has been pretty underwhelming really, more concerned with random accusations than the actual story. But here there's understandable references to the actual story. Everything they mention is in the chapter. Now, this kind of thing might make sense on chapter one, where someone doesn't bother reading the full story, but they somehow reached the thirteenth chapter of something called "Unoriginality" without figuring out it's a parody.

My best guess is someone linked them to a middle chapter.

When I first starting seeing everything GhetsisFan03 was saying, I was like, "Oh, how cute, a preteen campaigning on behalf of all the horrible fanfics on the site! Oh, well, he'll grow out of it."

Then I went to his profile and saw that he was a month younger than me and went. o_0

I'm assuming it's a big deal in Sonic fandom. From context, it seems to be somewhere along the line of mary sue and plagiarism.

Some people get really, really angry when, to create OC's for RP and such, authors take other people's artwork (either from the original source or other fanartists) and recolor it, instead of drawing their own. Especially since these same "artists" also often post their recolors on DeviantArt and go around bragging about their characters in ways like, "This is my charie, she is mine, don't steal her." Which is... I don't have a problem with it if it's a simple way to show the other roleplayers what the character looks like. But yeah, posting it on an art website is stupid. But anyway, that's probably where he's coming from.

But using it as a random insult is just.... o_0 Clearly he's desperate.

Huh. Maybe it's just that I don't run in fanart circles. I mean, if they're stealing other people's linework in the process, then that's bad, but tangential to if they change the colors. And generally "my character don't steal" doesn't seem like bragging to me.

I can see it being an issue if a lot of people end up clogging fanart sites with a million versions of the same picture, but that's not any different to terrible artists clogging up the sites by drawing their OC from scratch. (Which, in turn, isn't all that different from bad artists clogging the same sites with bad drawings of CCs. Though I know there's similar hate for shitty OC fiction instead of shitty fiction, so that at least isn't any different from the fanfic side.)

The issue is that they take a drawing someone else made (usually without permission) and change the color of the hair and/or clothes, instead of actually drawing. A typical example was a screenshot of May from the Pokemon anime, except they spray-painted all over her head so it looked like she had an afro. (Most aren't quite THAT lazy and require at least the skills to color in the lines, but you get the point) It's sufficient to convey to other roleplayers what the character looked like, but it didn't require much creativity or any effort. Therefore, it's (IMO) okay for a roleplay as long as you don't pretend you drew the whole thing, but it doesn't belong on a site like deviantArt.

Some people in such fanart circles, however, take this to the extreme and think that any recoloring for any purpose is bad because it is not original. Which is probably where Ghetsis is coming from.

It's different from clogging up the sites with crappy art because crappy art is still art: the artist put effort into drawing it, the artist didn't directly take another person's artwork, and if the artist keeps drawing the crappy artwork, said artist will eventually get better - and improving is part of the reason sites like dA exist. On the other hand, recoloring doesn't eventually lead to actual artistic skill and it involves using others' art without permission. (Pose-tracing is kind of a gray area, so I'm not sure about that, so let's just pretend that issue doesn't exist for now for sanity's sake.) And of course, a lot of this comes from the site rules. (I mostly see it on dA and it's a safe bet that Ghetsis got his ideas from there, so I'll just talk about dA for now.) Lack of talent is not against the rules of dA, recoloring is.

Maybe I just see this from the point of view of someone whose crappy afro scribbles over existing pictures would just change to crappy afro on stick figure, both involving roughly the same effort, but I think you assume too much of lazy people. And in the other direction, modifying art well does take skill - I'm familiar with this on a theoretical level, in that god knows I can't do it well. I also have no real sense of design), so even just changing colors on a sufficiently complex outfit (which, I presume, is probably not what we're talking about in the context of Sonic, but) to get something attractive but distinctive seems like it takes a degree of skill.

Of course, if they're enthusiastic and just need practice, then finding a way to force them to practice rather than take shortcuts would help. But you can't make people care. And if it's a site that's really for artwork I would be back to the clogging, in the same way it annoys me people post stuff that isn't a story on FFN, but dA apparently lets you post porn provided there's no penises in it, so it's not like their charter is really that focused on drawing it yourself.
