Did the usual Easter stuff. Hardboiled just over a dozen white eggs (some of the first batch cracked and I boiled more), dyed them, then dyed all the other eggs too. (As usual, the first batch had a lot of mistakes in it as I try, as I try every year, to get purple from red and blue. I finally managed a light purplish-grey which did not look awful) Most of the uncooked eggs came out best because I stopped with the purple by then. I got some interesting colors (one was an interesting copper color, another a day-glow yellow-green) and managed to make both bi- and tri-color eggs without the use of any eggholders.
Also, cooked food, tolerated relatives, got Easter-basket cookies, which are amazing, and...that's about it for Easter.
My beta's really doing poorly. The small growth on his dorsal fin started growing again and it's no longer small. It's now bigger than the fin, which is shriveling up. I've confirmed it's cancer since I can see red near the base from blood vessels. He's got a white discoloring on the top of his head, although I can't tell if that's from it being kept stuck out of water so much. (it's right along the very top, in a line) His sides are discolored, a sort of sickly dead tan color.
More importantly than all this, he can't swim. I've lowered the water because he was lying on the bottom, so now it's about two inches, just barely covering the heater. He manages to balance on the bottom of the tank to keep his head up. I'm not sure how much longer he's even going to be able to manage that. I'm trying to figure out exactly what's wrong. He seems like he can't control the back of his body. He only turns in one direction and when he does only his front part turns. He can still feel it if you touch there, but I'm not sure if he can still move it. He's had a good appetite but the last time I fed him he became so exhausted he slumped down to the bottom. And he's having more and more trouble straightening up all the way and had started lying with his tail flat.
I've put in some large rocks so he'll be able to get to the surface easier, but I really don't think he's going to last. If he's still alive tomorrow I'm going to take him out and completely replace the water. If the PH change doesn't kill him it should help with whatever infections he's got.
::sigh:: This is why I didn't want betas. They're like rats. They don't just die like other pets, they get sick and die of something. I don't know if I should kill him or not.
