I left the porch screen door open, so tonight we heard something back there. Thinking it was Kas-cat I went over to check and saw a big raccoon standing on the stairs. Really impressive looking. He was the size of a young dog, maybe twice or three times the size of Kas-cat. He was cautious of us but not timid - he paused at every time someone made a loud noise, but didn't run off, and seemed to understand the glass door was a barrier. And he had little hand-paws, and stood on two legs a bit, and looked very cute. He was a very adorable little disease-carrying garbage eater.
Anyway, he headed for the bag of dry catfood, so my mom chased him off. He moved away from her, but not really like he was scared. Just cautious, aware of what was going on, not wanting to get into close contact with us. He really seemed intelligent, not at all like the opossums.
I'm really thrilled to see one because there haven't been any raccoons in our area for years. They got killed off by rabies back when I was a lot younger, and there were just skunks and opossums.
