An Excellent Host (Aradia (Doc Scratch))
He keeps your room locked, but you know you will be able to leave when it is important to do so.
Even aside from how the updates (rather inevitably) turned out, the fact is, locking someone up and not letting them leave until you decide it's necessary is incredibly controlling, and that's not fixed just by saying Aradia doesn't mind.
That really goes for the whole of this. Aradia saying she's fine with things or that she's choosing to do things just reads like another layer of manipulation by Doc Scratch, because she's still a little kid doing exactly what he wants.
I feel like the author was probably trying to minimize the ickiness but it really just made it so much worse.
Caught in the Act (Snowman (SS, Karkat, Terezi))
She laid her magazine on the dash and took his hand – the right one, which these days was all hydraulic cylinders and wires and carefully-crafted hinges – in hers, turning it over. He let her, snarling all the while. “Nice.”
“Not as fucking nice as the goddamn original, you insufferable bitch.” He snatched the arm away and glared at her, two feet away, perched on the edge of the car seat like he was about to jump for her throat or run like hell.
A perfect summation of their relationship right there.
I also love that Snowman's solution to the kids is to just traumatize them further, Terezi deciding it's more important to use this mess with Vriska, and Karkat's extremely noisy attempt to smother himself.
Oasis (DD (CD))
I like all the details of exile here, and the measuredness of the relationship between them - DD is taking care of CD, but isn't overly sentimental or concerned for him.
Trollesgarten (Karkat (SS, DD, Aradia))
This is just terribly cute.
“I do have concerns about his language.”
“He’s a foul-mouthed little shit,” Slick grumbled. When he realized what he’d said, he didn’t look embarrassed – Karkat doubted the man even possessed such an expression – but his scowl did intensify.
The Mentor blinked and then nodded, smiling widely, as if the world suddenly made sense.
And this is terribly funny.
I also really want to see what happens next now that Slick knows Snowman's kids are around. Did he even realize she had kids? Does he storm the mansion and yell because obviously she did this just to spite him?
I wish the troll/exile things weren't so set. Droog and Aradia in particular is making me twitch more every time. That was her dead psycho robot version getting along with Droog, and not even that well. Droog's kid being fussy and proper is fine, but the more she shows up the more obvious it is it has nothing to do with Aradia. Kanaya or someone would be a better fit. She's the calm fashion oriented one who suddenly chainsaws people.
Tatters (Stitch (Droog))
A pretty convincing depiction of their relationship, beyond the usual he likes clothes/he makes clothes basics. And I hadn't really thought Droog would ever enjoy destroying his clothes, but this actually feels very plausible.
Dress (Stitch (Droog))
Sharp Dressed Man (Stitch (Droog, Fin, Trace, Crowbar, Snowman))
The only person who seems to have figured out that Droog's not a woman is Snowman, but she seems to be keeping her mouth shut, perhaps because it amuses her, or out of some vague sense of politeness.
The more important thing is if she's figures out it's Droog, since she'd have a reason to mention it then. Or does she not think too much of the rivalry?
Come to think of it, I wonder how much importance carapaces would give to gendered clothes.
I feel I should feel bad for Fin, but they're just so entertaining about it, and it's not like Fin is a great guy himself. Is Stitch right about why Fin was so interested in his girlfriend, or was it just to further freak Fin out?
Effigy (Snowman (Die, Stitch))
Mission: Piano (Karkat (SS, Terezi, Vriska, Aradia, Sollux, Tavros))
I wish you'd just put whatever the aside is in parenthesis. The bits are good, but footnotes work in a book because a reader can glance down and glance back up without losing their place. It doesn't work if I have to just keep reading to the end of the section, read the note out of context, then scroll back up to figure out where it came from and what it means.
Anyway, besides the fact I can't believe Karkat doesn't end up with his recorder broken in half and then stabbed through his head, all of this is a strangely convincing progression of events. The kids are amusing, the crew is amusing, Vriska is randomly punching Karkat, Terezi is punching him for complaining about being punched, Slick being driven to near insanity, all the things a good fic needs.
