I understand a lot of people have missed the necessary background to fully appreciate this because of the inane, contradicting news reports and/or boredom.

So here's your background:

Iran and Iraq are neighboring countries. They hate each other. There are a lot of issues, but at the core, Iran favors Shiites and suppresses Sunnis, and Iraq favored Sunnis and suppressed Shiites. Iran would have loved to invade Iraq, but they don't have the power.

Holy Lord Bush came to office. Holy Lord Bush's father once fought a great war against Iraq, but didn't finish the job and actually invade Iraq. Holy Lord Bush wanted to finish up his father's legacy.

The Bush administration began to get reports that Iraq had weapons. These reports come from an Iranian double-agent. Iran hates Iraq, remember. No one cares. It's an excuse, and that's what's important.

Bush invades Iraq. No nuclear program is found. No nukes are found. Iranian double-agent does happy dance and then goes to start handing over American information to the Iranians.

Iranian double-agent is caught. Deception is learned. There's a big scandal in some other countries who care more about what we're doing than we do.

Iran shrugs to itself, knowing that the US is unable to attack them because we're busy with Iraq.

And now: Iran decides to revive their nuclear program. They claim it's just for nuclear power, not weapons. Yeah, right.

US government is unable to do anything because our president was too busy with his damn 'starve-the-beast' economic policies. Iran can do whatever it wants without fear of retribution.

Iran's government is brilliant.

One thing you forgot to add into the little triangle of love between the three was that America helped finance the war Iraq had against Iran. And of course the wonderful black gold, oil and its connections with the US admin. Politics is always a complicated business. Perhaps the nuclear power is for economics.

I just heard on the news that US was putting sactions on Iran unless they stopped their nuclear programme.

It also raises the interesting question- should only the major powers be allowed nuclear weapons. All fine and good for them to say Nukes are evil but not too make any serious effort to reduce their own numbers. Russia and the US have enough to destroy the world many times over. Almost as bad as the European powers denouncing slavery after using it for hundreds of years. Considering the US attitude to Iran- would you blame them to attempt to arm themselves?

Major powers with nukes aren't as dangerous, but more importantly, the sanctions are more to keep the total numbers of countries with nuclear missiles down. The US is certainly abusing its power (and has, and will continue to) but we don't use nukes. We made it through the Cold War without launching them. Little countries have less to lose and are more likely to have unstable rulers or violent power struggles.

I mean, if more countries there have access to nuclear bombs, how long would it be until one was 'accidentally' stolen by some group? Bye-bye Israel, it was nice knowing you.
