Polar Bears
Jun. 16th, 2006 10:24 pmSo polar bears are starving to death and they've begun to cannibalize each other.
This seems horrible to me, but a quick google search for what other people are saying helps temper the feeling of depression into depression mixed with anger.
The media is reporting this as unusual because polar bears don't usually eat each other, at least not that often. Which is missing the point that polar bears have never been known to eat other polar bears, even ones killed in fights. They have definitely never been known to stalk and hunt each other. But if you say it the other way, it doesn't sound so much like something we should be sympathetic about, and just a sign that polar bears are hungry.
Meanwhile, a lot of the non-media talking about it are just cheery because it's more proof that yes, global warming fucking is happening, accept it already. There's this sort of smug tone to it, for all they sound upset, and the focus is on the melting ice.
It's a much nicer way of thinking about it. If you talk about them as amoral, and of course they're eating each other, and things like that, then it's sort of bothersome, because they'll go extinct, but it's not really upsetting.
