FFN people are reviewing Lucki. Morbane seems especially confused, but points out a problem.

I also enjoyed the part where Lucki chose a Pokémon. That sort of scene is either silly, or drawn out with great implications of destiny. Whereas one like Lucki wouldn't have that sort of time or omniscience.

Dammit!

Any advice on fixing that?

Ooh, that was nice. I read the first chapter on ff.net and the rest on Serebii right after (I'm PlatinumDragoness on ff). It felt weird, being good and bad at the same time, but more and more bad went into the plot as it went along. It was really nicely down, how there was nothing specific to identify throughout much of it as cliched/badly thought out, but it all eventually came together by near the end.

One question I had was--you write wonderful parodies and critices, but do you think it's possible to write Pokemon fanfic that isn't bad/cliched, parody/dark and bloody, or boring? I don't read much of the fandom other than your stuff and I haven't written anything in years, so I don't have much experience with what's out there. Do you think it can be done and if so, do you have any examples that you like?

Yep.

The category probably does have a bias, though. If you assume the majority of writers are younger, and that the majority of younger authors are bad, the majority of badfic isn't going to be dark, which in turn means some of the good writers end up fed up with the standard and trying to write something different, which in turn means much of the good writing is dark. (Honestly, I wouldn't write half so darkly if a dozen new vanilla stories didn't go up each day)

It does depend on how broadly you define "dark", though. Most stories need some level of seriousness and consequence just for the sake of plot, especially longer ones, and so on some level, it's either dark, humor, or boring. But even with a broad definition, Lynny M (http://www.fanfiction.net/u/487933/) and Kazeto Tamashii (http://www.fanfiction.net/u/65688/) have a number of lighter pokemon one-shots, and Silawen has Caught in the Moment (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2187188/1/) along those same lines. Act (http://www.fanfiction.net/u/611695/)'s chaptered stuff is more or less undark, although I'm far from the only one in the category to have apparently innocent stories spiral downward, so I can't promise speak for what the plot ultimately would be. There's probably a ton here I'm unfairly forgetting - unless I remember to favorite it, I usually lose track of stories. And as I said, it's depending on your definition. There are a good number of more serious stories that do have darker elements, but aren't primarily angsty, tragic, gory or ending with the complete breakdown of all the characters followed by the end of the world. Negrek (http://www.fanfiction.net/u/680618/) has a number of stories that often have slight dark tinges but are overall adventure or some other genre. Gods and Demons (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1952524/1/) and Xanthic Growlithe Contract (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1713895/1/) are serious and not particularly light-hearted trainer stories, but not, I'd say, actual darkfic.
