Nightmares

So I'm on the second night in a row of really nasty nightmares. The first one was based off 28 Days Later, which I did not even see. Apparently, the trailers plus all of ten billion other trailers for other horror movies I also haven't seen in my life are enough to embed the stuff in my brain, and I'm also tired enough that I'm getting really lucid, well thought out plotlines with really vivid images. Because I wanted a dream about zombie dead-blue colored kids who are chained up in empty cells in a massive stainless steel antiseptic building because people didn't want to kill them, and they're still feeding them, but it's not good enough because they've tasted flesh, and they're trying to get loose, and they're eating themselves and then they do get loose. And this was all really well explained and inevitable and all made sense, and that I spent a good half of the dream getting a voiceover explanation while watching various horrible things happen. Because apparently I wanted it explained that the dead kids are eating themselves, and chewing their own hands loose and stuff with visuals to really drive in the point.

And now, because zombies were played out by eight hours of not-sleep, I had a dream about a world where Lovecraftian monsters were taking over, and if you fought back they'd mutilate you horribly and destroy everything, and if you didn't fight back they'd keep expanding their power and then mutilate you horribly and destroy everything. (This was based off a story where the Lovecraftian monsters had taken over England. Not because I read it recently or it disturbed me, but the concept)It was very much in the zombie format of anyone in contact just added numbers, so people were all hiding in places and stuff kept happening like sending people down into some deep cave under the ocean, but then when the guy came back and begged to be brought back up before the monsters behind him reach him, they cut the radio and leave him there.

Only later someone else comes and hears him, except he's been there weeks now and should have died because there's no food or anything, and he's not sounding at all hysterical even though he was to start and the things were right behind him and now he's been there for weeks, and they flip the switch and start bringing him back up, but of course he's not really him any longer, and everyone else just has time to hear about this before whatever the thing is pretending to be him arrives. And this format just repeats over and over, with various horrible things that all have far too much explanation behind them.

The best part is why I'm having nightmares. It's because there were these fruit flies, and they were kind of in bottles where they were kind of out of food, and I was having to look at them under a microscope and got to discover that fruit flies turn hollow when they're starving, so they're just this little exoskeleton walking around mindlessly with all their insides gone, over the corpses of other fruit flies, without any chance of escape, until they finally die.

Because that's what horror really is. It's seeing something and not knowing what it is as you learn in closer, and then realizing. That sick sensation when what was in front of you the whole time snaps into meaning, and you know what it was you were looking at so calmly.

It's not for any point. It's just that the fruit flies are being mass produced and the lines kept going, so once a month adults are moved to a new vial, and then the old vial is kept as backup. After several months the vials are thrown away, because they're not needed and because by that point they're usually out of food and the fruit flies are dying anyway.

But there were mites found in one of the vials in one of the old boxes, and so the other vials had to be checked carefully for tiny mites under the microscope.
