Chapter Nine of my ongoing offense against the fanfic gods is up! Soooooooo read that I guess?

Speaking of fanfic I am tempted to write sympathetic Eridan fic just so there is sympathetic Eridan fic in existence that isn't creepy apologism. Or more sympathetic Vriska fic just because Vriskaaaaaaaa D::::

And I am terrified new updates will change Snowman's character and people won't write fic I want about her. Because I rely on others to write about Snowman. I am terribly dependent. It's not like Vriska, where people can think whatever they like about Vriska and I will write ALL OF THE FIC about how they're wrong if I must.

(Although if this is really her just death I will not be happy. I was just barely accepting it until I saw other people and how it'd get interpreted as proof Vriska's stupid, selfish, and to blame for absolutely everything.)

SYMPATHETIC ERIDAN FIC. YES. I've somehow become massively fond of his chracter, but, well. It's hard to find morally gray fic involving him.

Actually, do you maybe have any Homestuck fanfic recs? Particularly stuff involving Eridan, Vriska or the Midnight Crew? It's fine if not, but I'm pretty new to this fandom and I thought since you've been reviewing so many stories you might have some favorites.

I think the only tolerable Eridan fic is the pre-SCIENCEWAND stuff. After that it's all woobie in tragic love with Feferi (bitch rejected him!!!) and/or Sollux (bitch got in the way!!!). Unfortunately most of his characterization came not long before that update, so in most of the early fic he's more a collection of fanon and in-jokes.

The FFN section is anemic, AOOO is where the bulk of stuff is. Unfortunately I haven't been keeping up properly there. I'd suggest just flip through the tags, there's not much MC stuff. Also, a lot of the decent MC stuff is porn. Conceptofzero (LJ and AOOO for nonporn, dreamwidth for notnonporn, tumblr for random) does the lion's share of the stuff.

...Ugh. I can't honestly say I'm surprised that Feferi's getting blamed for that. Of course it could never possibly be his fault.

It's nothing compared to the treatment Vriska's gotten since her introduction, though I'm sure you're already aware of that...

Apparently all my friends (all of them!) are huge Vriska fans. We had a long talk about how we were mildly distressed by the deaths of various characters we were largely indifferent to, but now everyone in my circle is freaking out because only our favorite characters are left and now they're scared.

(Oh fandom, deal with the fact that every other character can't stand Eridan for reasons entirely his fault--not that there can't be sympathietic fic, it just needs to be really screwed up.) (Snowman's actually making me happy--she's drawn so prettily and so much <3< yes.) These updates also prove I can ship tons of mutually exclusive things at the same time--I don't know why I wasn't a huge Nepeta fan.

I liked basically everyone except Gamzee, though I was never too enamored with Sollux or Feferi.

And honestly, something about how Eridan is a woobie because no one else can stand him would be a step up! I am brimming with sympathy for forevver alone Eridan even if there's little mention of how it's basically his own fault. Instead it's either fic about how he didn't mean to do it and he's so sorry really it was all an accident! Or his deep romantic love for someone and how Feferi somehow was the blame.

It's basically the only fic written at that time that made me not hate him, because it makes it so inescapably obvious what a kid he is, and he's mixed up in all the same ways that make Vriska so sympathetic. By the end I was rooting for him to live even though I still thought he was pretty much a terrible person.

That's just my reaction to it, though.

It doesn't try to explain his actions so much as wallow in his lack of excuse for it - though there's definitely sympathy found in how abjectly miserable he is.

I'm thinking of the delicious middle ground that is saying Eridan had reasons for what he did without the "and therefore it was justified and Feferi should have put out" followup. It always seemed to me that Eridan's quadrant issues played a major part in his breakdown beyond just Nice Guyism, it's just that doesn't mean it's anyone else's fault.
