It's been absolutely gorgeous, with heavy white snow and heavier white mist.

And either Mella's never seen this much snow before or she's a slow learner.

She wanted to go outside so I went down to the basement and opened the door, which had half filled in with snow. And she just gaped at it. She tried sniffing it but that failed to reveal an opening and eventually had to give up.

We'd set up the bird feeders in advance and she tried to sneak up there to attack the birds. She could jump from the driveway up to the top of the snow without a problem. It was just that then she sank. It was hilarious to watch her sheer disbelief that this could happen to her. She kept trying to go forward only to just sink again every time she shifted her weight. Then rather than turn around she decided to just head right for the door and come in, then a little ways into that realized that involved going much further through the snow and finally went back to the driveway, so there's a half circle of broken snow there now as testament to the fact cats can never just admit something's a bad idea and turn around.

I let her out again and then sat laughing as she gingerly picked her way along, backtracked to the door, then couldn't actually admit defeat and come back inside and left again, then repeated for about five minutes. She looks like she's limping because she's trying stand with the minimum amount of actual touching the ground.

And then after all her attempts to walk around without actually getting her paws in contact with the wet, she went under the back porch of all things, through all that snow, instead of coming back to the front door to just call to be let in.

Also the neighbor's baby tomcat came by to say hello! He is adorable and today, also muddy for some reason.
