Time continues!
Dec. 16th, 2015 11:59 pmAnd I'm older.
Also, looks like I'm getting another chicken.
Current events are so weird. There's that Childhood's End show on TV and it reminds me of how when I read the book ages ago, I thought how incredibly optimistic the writer had been in thinking we'd be in a much better place even before the aliens showed up to fix things. And since then it's often seemed like we're not so much moving slower than expected but actually backward. But then there's other things where there seems to be so much progress - I'm stunned that somehow we got from "it's progressive to not ask if people are gay before letting them into the military" all the way to "trans people are okay I guess" already. I'm a little worried that this is going to be a wobble thing and there'll be backlash, but it seems like most people just don't care enough when it comes down to it to cause a backlash - it's just become normal.
I really hope the Republican party grits their teeth and refuses to nominate Trump so he'll have to run third-party and split the vote. After everything they've done, they could redeem themselves a little by throwing themselves on this grenade.

Date: 2015-12-18 02:07 am (UTC)Trans stuff is terribly wobbly now but there's publicly trans people on magazines when a little while ago publicly gay people were thin on the ground. If the trajectory keeps going they'll end up normal and focus will shift to an even more marginalized group trying to get decent treatment. Genderqueer stuff, maybe? I hope not otakukin or I'll end up the evil *ist monster.
I'm not sure how seriously to take the SJW pushback because there's legitimately batshit SJW stuff and also on the other side includes Gamergate or other reasonably marginalized crazy groups who are just mad that they don't have the power to call the shots any longer and choosing to die loudly in the most annoying way they can. A lot of stuff around here seems to be about control and societal stuff, one way or another - can you say a word, can you have an abortion, can you go to a doctor, can you have guns/can you not be shot by guns, can the police do anything they want... There used to be a stronger element of that in trans stuff with the idea trans people were tricking others so it was everybody else's business, but maybe that's tied really strongly to homophobia and reducing similarly. Right now it seems the main media hangup is "okay but do you have a dick??? I must know!" which is shitty but better than "I'm holding your pronouns hostage until you confirm your genitals match, no you're the jerk for pretending to be something you're not!" At this rate it's on track to be like sexism where everyone at least agrees that that "sexism" is a bad thing bad people do and will go through the effort of being subtle about their prejudices.
