Christmas Eve
Dec. 24th, 2005 10:07 pmGeneric holiday tidings to you all.
I'd like to take a moment to thank my pagan ancestors. You can call it Christmas and put up all the nativity scenes you want, but the core of the holiday remains blissfully unchanged: evergreen plants, colorful shiny things, and presents.

Re: An opinion.
Date: 2005-12-25 07:57 am (UTC)No. December 25th was 'Dies Natalis Solis Invicti', the 'Birth of the Unconquered Sun' in the cult of Mithras in the Roman empire. It was so hugely popular that by the time Christianity rolled around, they ignored the fact that Jesus was probably born in the spring and made Dec. 25th Jesus' birthday in order to eclipse Mithraism more completely.
So, it's possible that the 'pagens', whoever they are, may have chosen to have their holiday on Dec. 25th as well, but I believe real Pagans/Wiccans celebrate Yule, or the Winter Solstice, on the 21st.
PWNT, by the way.
