The more I think about this the more I actually want to do it.

Is there any good repository of different fan sburb games I could use to get a baseline?

I don't think there's a repository as such, but the biggest ones I know of are the Formspring rp sessions, which I think you've read some of already, and Nestbound. Also I think graven_image has been writing one that's fairly popular in the fanfic thread.

I can't even keep up with the Intermission formsprings, I never even tried with the OCs. I'll have to try digging some up. Presumably they're on the wiki.

Ah, yeah, the fanfic ones. The last time I read through the fanfic thread I skipped over sburb-OCs because they seemed boring, I'll have to check it out again.

They are boring, and most of the fandom knows it and will say so if pressed on the issue. I think Graven's success is largely due to him having started out with multiple huge chapter fics about canon characters and gaining a fan following that way.

Well, on the brighter side years in the Pokemon fandom have prepared me for this. And hopefully I'll be able to leverage that into knowing how to edit anything of my own.

oh god pokemon did not prepare me for this
at least in pokemon fanfics people go in the general direction of their goal
this is payback for spamming honks everywhere isn't it god

Yeah, this is what happens when people who are not Andrew Hussie try to structure a story like he does.

Also people who are not drawing comics try to write a story like a comic.

It is like being lost in a very confusing gray void of boringness.

...please tell me you're not forcing yourself to read the furry one. I refer to it as "the furry one" and yet that was somehow the very least of its issues.

I'm not sure what that even is? I just read Graven_Image's first...thing and then the first chapter of their second try.

Then I ran back to Nestbound.

...but now I need a link because I don't learn from experience.

Forum archive -> Aerok12 -> Alandoned

You asked for it. I wash my hands of this.

ooooh right that one.

I must have blocked it from my memory. It's the one where everyone keeps turning out to be gay too, right? Or something like that.

I think so. I don't know, though, I could never bring myself to read more than a few paragraphs at a time.

I didn't, I just remember seeing an author's note at the end of a post saying something about yet another gay character and how they should stop making everyone gay and thinking that was a really weird way of putting it.

And then I combined gay with furry in my head and didn't want to read any to find out how it actually went.

Fun fact! For like two weeks I decided to be an Upstanding Member of the Community and put Zuki's "Ask me to review anything!" offer in my signature. Aerok was the only person to take me up. Aaaaaaah.

Then the server change deleted everyone's signatures and I never bothered to put it back in.

It's probably part of that thing where the less someone knows what they're doing, the more confident they are. Right when I finished NaRe someone asked me to review their story because it's their first serious attempt at fanfic, want to do a good job, etc etc. I glanced at it and they hit pretty much every grammar error I list in my reviews.

Still, you could always go for the cursory review of the first chapter and then say X just isn't your thing.

I ended up bluntly telling them that it was pretty much unreadable and I could only stomach so much of it, then skimming some later chapters and finding a few things they did right-ish to compliment them on.

Not totally sure I'll actually commit to it but...so tempting.

If you are going to do this, I would recommend making the species avions or reptiles, since Homestuck's species are mammals, and Hivebent's are insects. Avions or reptiles would add for more diversity.

Also Nestbound is indeed adorable. :D :D :D The romance/relationship explanation is extremely confusing though, since I don't know much about physics and it sounds over-complicated. x_x

I was thinking of octopi.

Oh god yes. I'm reading through the thread and half of it is people saying that and the inventor insisting it has to be used and going on about all the other stuff they've done using it they haven't posted yet.

Octopi, huh? That sounds intriguing, and also innovative, as I suggested. I would like a reptilian species better, but octopi have similarities with squiddles, so that works too! How would that work though? Would they be amphibious or would everything be underwater?

And ugh, yeah that guy is crazy. A few pages in he flips out and starts swearing at people, which caused a moderator to have to moderate the thread. Said moderator was very annoyed and there was lots of drama. They seem to calm down after a few pages, though. Still hoping Nestbound uses a less complex gender system, making a gender/caste for every single type of subatomic particle is just absurd and has no logical connection to bug things.

Loving all the other stuff people are talking about in the thread, though.

The hat the species is going to wear is getting along with everyone, which reptiles don't fit well with. And I'm going with amphibious. Octopi already can move out of water for periods.

I am inexplicably fond of them.

I could totally justify it as having to do with the squiddles but really I just want to hug an octopus. They look so huggable.

Sometimes they hug back! And then you end up with painful-looking sucker-hickies all over your arms!

Yes, I have seen this on video.

I have cats, I'm used to affection maulings. At least with the octopus it's curiosity and not a demand I produce food.

I dunno, to me it looked kind of like an attempt to see if the hug recipient was food.

...As long as it goes with "not food" in the end I'd still take it. They're smart, I'm sure next time we hug it'd remember.

They are squishy cute and therefore can be forgiven anything.
